Lucas Claims Liverpool Can Win the EFL Cup This Season

Lucas Leiva is backing Liverpool to go all the way with regard to the League Cup this season.

After a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the EFL Cup, the Reds will be playing in the final stages of the competition. Jurgen Klopp managed to get the club into the finals of last season, only to be beaten by Manchester City in what turned out to be Manuel Pellegrini’s final season at the club. It was a major disappointment for Klopp as he failed to win a trophy in his first season. It would have given the players a major boost, but it seems that the German has not been in need of it.

Klopp has managed to get Liverpool playing in an extremely attractive fashion while also managing to get results. The team moved to the top of the table, and they clearly seem to be benefiting from the lack of European action in the midweek. The lack of European football also puts a lot of onus on the EFL Cup, as it is a major trophy that can be won by the team.

After coming so close last season, Lucas reckons that the club can finally end the trophy drought which has been going on since the last success for the club in this competition back in 2012.

“Last year we came very close, but we don’t have any European [games] this year and hopefully we can win all three competitions. It was very good experience for [the young players], and they will develop.I think the manager showed the trust that he has in the squad and I think it was the right decision,” said Lucas. Daniel Sturridge scored both in the win.“It’s a nice feeling [to be back], but I’m grateful to god for helping me get through all the things I’ve had to go through and I’m happy with tonight,” said Sturridge.
