Jordan Henderson dismisses reports that he will be Captain of Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has dismissed reports that he is all set to replace Steven Gerrard as the new Liverpool captain.

Gerrard will be leaving Liverpool for LA Galaxy at the end of the season. This brings an end to more than two decades of service at the club. More crucially, Gerrard has been the heartbeat of Liverpool on several occasions. His contribution to the club on the night of the Champions League final in 2005 forever remain in the hearts of Liverpool fans. As the season approaches its end, Gerrard’s successor is yet to be revealed by Brendan Rodgers.

So far, Henderson has been used as a stand-in captain and the former Sunderland midfielder has done an excellent work in this regard. Yet, there are several players who came to the club a long time before him. The likes of Lucas Leiva have been at Liverpool for almost a decade and there have been suggestions that the Brazilian should be awarded the captaincy. Henderson himself has acknowledged that he does not know whether he would become the permanent captain since there are number of candidates within the team like Daniel Sturridge and Lucas. He has also suggested that defenders Martin Skrtel and Emre Can can also be considered.

"Next season we'll see what happens because it might not be me succeeding Stevie, it might be someone else. There are a lot of strong leaders in the dressing room. There are a lot of big characters in the team - down to earth, humble people.Mama [Sakho], Emre [Can] and Skrts [Martin Skrtel] have developed a strong collective understanding. You can see their passion, they're desperate to win, they give everything. Studge [Daniel Sturridge] is a big character. Lucas [Leiva] is too. I can only do the current job the best I can," said Henderson.
