LUCAS DELIGHTED WITH NUNEZ IMPACT
Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva is delighted with the impact made by new signing Darwin Nunez on Liverpool since his transfer to the club this summer. Lucas Leiva described Nunez as a brilliant player at the end of last month following his brilliant cameo against Premier League champions Manchester City in this year's Community Shield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the first goal of the Community Shield in the first half and it was cancelled out by City substitute and new signing Julian Alvarez in the second half. Nunez had entered the game as a second half substitute when Alvarez scored for City some minutes after he was subbed on in the second half. With the scoreline at 1-1, Nunez won a penalty off the handball by City defender Ruben Dias for Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to score it and edge Liverpool 2-1 ahead with seven minutes left on the clock. Nunez then wrap up the 3-1 victory with his goal in added time.
Just like he did against City in the Community Shield, Nunez came off the bench to score in the Premier League opener for Liverpool this season as his team played out a disappointing 2-2 draw with hosts Fulham. Nunez scored and provided an assist during the game with newly promoted team Fulham. He made his first Liverpool start during the league game at home to Crystal Palace last week Monday and it ended in a red card for him on 57 minutes after his headbutt on Palace defender Joachim Andersen. He will miss three games as a result. Nunez missed out on the 2-1 loss to hosts and arch rivals Manchester United in the league on Monday night and he will miss two more games.
