LUCAS LEIVA: 2012 L/CUP FINAL REVIEWED

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was an important member of the Liverpool team that won the 2011/12 League Cup title by beating lower league opposition Cardiff City on penalties in the 2012 League Cup final.

Liverpool had not won any major trophy for six years before the run came to an end with the League Cup triumph under club legend Kenny Dalglish who was drafted on an interim basis until the end of the 2011/12 season after Roy Hodgson was sacked some months into his appointment which was made in the summer of 2011. Liverpool would go on another trophyless run for seven years before current manager JurgenKlopp masterminded its end with the 2018/19 Champions League triumph thanks to the 2-0 win over fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 Champions League final with goals from Egyptian talent Mohamed Salah (penalty) and Belgian substitute DivockOrigi.

LucasLeiva was not in the 2012 League Cup final squad, and he had left the club by the time won the Champions League title via the 2019 Champions League final as revealed above. Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leivaleft Liverpool withthat League Cup title alone.

Liverpool won their eighth and final League Cup clash in 2012 under King Kenny ‘Kenny Dalglish’ by beating Welsh side Cardiff City on penalties after the two teams shared a four-goal thriller at the end of extra time. The Reds were favourites but Cardiff City gave a good account of themselves as they came close to winning if not for the dreaded penalty shootout.

Joe Mason gave Cardiff City a first half lead in the final before Martin Skrtel dragged Liverpool level on the hour mark to force extra time. Liverpool took the lead for the first time in the game through substitute Dirk Kuyt on 108 minutes before Ben Turner scored the equaliser for Cardiff City with two minutes left to play. In the penalty shootout, Liverpool missed their first two spot kicks, but they still manage to win 3-2 to win the trophy.

LUCAS ADMITS LOVE FOR ANFIELD

Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva has admitted his love for Anfield after the Brazilian international said that he missed the place so much. Lucas Leiva made this known in his reply to the picture posted by former Liverpool teammate Luis Enrique on his official Instagram account.

Liverpool fans were impressed with the response of Lucas Leiva to the picture posted by Luis Enrique during the recent Champions League game between Liverpool and Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. Spanish player Enrique posted a photo of him alongside Liverpool manager JurgenKlopp and Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez after the big Champions League clash between two of the best teams on the European football scene.

Luis Suarez was a teammate of both Luis Enrique and Lucas Leiva at Liverpool.

For the game, Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League round of 16 thanks to the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid in Group B. The Reds were able to maintain their perfect start to this season’s Champions League campaign via the straightforward victory over their Spanish opposition.

Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota were the goalscorers for Liverpool, with England international right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold providing the ammunition for the two goals in the first half. The game as a spectacle was over in the final nine minutes of the first half when Brazilian defender Felipe was sent off for two yellow cards in bizarre fashion. The second yellow card was issued to the Atletico Madrid player after he failed to heed the call from the centre referee Danny Makkelle. A lot of the Atletico Madrid players were not happy with the level of bias shown by the Dutch referee towards the Liverpool players.

Atletico Madrid had earlier finished the first game against Liverpool this season with ten men after Antoine Griezmann was given his marching orders in the second half. Liverpool won the game 3-2 thanks in part to their numerical advantage.

LUCAS STRUGGLES IN BIG VERONA DEFEAT

Brazilian international Lucas Leiva was part of the Lazio midfield that struggled to impose themselves on the Italian Serie A clash with Hellas Verona at the weekend. Lucas Leiva and the other Lazio midfielders could not protect the defence from conceding four goals against their hosts.

The Lazio team under new manager Maurizio Sarri has been inconsistent in the league this season and this was further highlighted by the 4-1 loss to Verona on Sunday. The big defeat to Verona came on the back of the impressive 2-1 comeback win at home to defending champions Inter Milan.

In their first group game, Lazio were beaten 1-0 by hosts Galatasaray. The lone goal was an unfortunate own goal from Lazio goalkeeper Tomas Strakosha. The Albanian shot stopper put through his own net midway into the second half to hand Galatasaray the points on offer. At the end of the first set of games in Group E, Lazio trailed others thanks to the defeat to Galatasaray. LEIVA SAYS THERE’S STILL TIME FOR LIVERPOOL TO DO SOME BUSINESS

While Liverpool fans have continued to wait on their club to confirm the signing of another player this summer, it continues to look like they will have to wait in vain as the club have continued to look like they will not be engaging in any more business activities after confirming the arrival of French defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. The Reda confirmed the agreement with Leipzig and the defender before the end of last season and the transfer was made official this summer after the player traveled to England to complete the medical tests and proceeding to sign on the dotted lines to confirm that he is contracted to the club.

Since then, Liverpool have been rather quiet in the summer transfer window and it continues to look highly unlikely that they will sign any other payer with each day that passes. Konate is a top signing and manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that he was pleased after the signing was done and dusted. However, having been asked a couple of times already whether the club do have plans to sign any other player this summer, the German manager has refused to give out any tangible information, insisting that they will sign another player only when they deem fit.

Their former player Lucas Leiva has now called on the club to get active in the summer transfer window as there is still time for them to sign one or two more players. Leiva says it might prove very costly for them if they insist that that they do not need to sign another player and they may have to face the same crisis they faced last season.

The former Reds star argued that the move by other clubs to strengthen their squads is a smart one and Liverpool should follow suit if they want to challenge their rivals for trophies this season.

LAZIO DIRECTOR COMMENDED FOR KNOCKDOWN

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has received praise for his quality in the transfer market. This is according to the report fromItalian media outlet The Liziali. Tare was in the spotlight again after the impressive transfer for Luka Romero.

Romero, 16, is one of the best young players in European football and he was snapped up by Tare and Lazio from Real Mallorca last week with the club paying just a small fee for him. The teenager is connected to Argentina thereby leading to comparison to the great Lionel Messi since they both have similar physique.

Lazio will be required to pay a training fee to Spanish team Real Mallorca for Romero.
Tare and Lazio have a track of record of bargain buys who went on to become an important player in the first team and Romero would be hoping to take this path too. Tare was the mastermind for deals involving players such as Lucas Leiva, Francesco Acerbi, Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto.

Lazio paid a knockdown fee to sign Lucas Leiva from Liverpool in the summer of 2017 and he went on to become an integral part of the team’s midfield department. Brazilian international Lucas Leiva had to leave Merseyside giants Liverpool four years ago in search of regular first team football and he has been able to find a home in the Italian capital.

Lucas Leiva thrived under manager Simone Inzaghi over the past years and he will have to prove himself all over again with new manager Maurizio Sarri. Sarri has been appointed the new Lazio boss on a two-year deal and as a replacement for Inzaghi who left the club to sign for Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan. Inzaghi has a big task ahead of him as Inter Milan target winning the league for the second time in a row at the start of his tenure at the club.

LUCAS CONVINCED ON GREAT KLOPP MOMENT

Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva has revealed that he was convinced that a great moment was coming at Liverpool under manager JurgenKlopp when he left the Reds to move to the Italian Serie A four years ago.

Lucas Leiva talked about Liverpool in a chat with Extra Time on the club’s official TV station (LFCTV) on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Klopp as the Reds manager towards the end of last year. According to the Brazilian international, he could feel that a great moment was coming and that Liverpool would start winning big trophies.

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva joined Liverpool in the summer of 2007 and he had spent over eight years at Anfield before the Reds appointed German tactician Klopp as their manager. He spent almost two years under Klopp before leaving to sign for Lazio in 2017. While he was at Liverpool under German manager Klopp, the club reached two major cup finals in addition to Champions League qualification. Lucas left Liverpool for Italy with the conviction that the Merseyside giants would start winning trophies.

Lucas Leivawas proven right as Liverpool won four major trophies between 2019 and 2020 including the Champions League. The Reds won the Champions League title in the summer of 2019 to end their barren run of seven years without a trophy. Liverpool beat North London giants Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 during the 2019 Champions League final thanks to the goals from Mohamed Salah and DivockOrigito win a sixth European title.

On Klopp as a manager, Lucas Leiva said he learned a lot from him in his two years under him. According to him, Klopp always treated him with so much respect and he always tried to reciprocate the gesture. It’s not surprising that Lucas Leiva has maintained a close relationship with Klopp despite leaving for the Italian Serie A many years ago.

LEIVA: IT WAS AN HONOR TO PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL

English Premier League giants Liverpool have had a number of great players to have played for the team in the last decades and while some of those players came through the youth academy ranks at Anfield, some others were brought in from another club. Top stars like Fernando Torres, Xavi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, and others have all cemented their names in the history of the club as some of the best players to have played for Liverpool in the last decades.

While it is normal for a club to have a crop of star players, some would not make it to the spotlight like the others, but they would still, with their own contributions, be as important to the squad as the other key players. One example of this type of player is Lucas Leiva. The former Liverpool man was usually not the best of the best at Anfield during his time at the club but he was equally an important tool and was very helpful and useful as a crucial member of the squad as a whole.

The former midfielder has now revealed how much of an honor it was to play for the Reds, signing that he remained brave to remain a Liverpool player even though he was getting offers from other clubs to sign for them. Although he eventually left Liverpool and signed for Italian Serie A outfit Lazio, the move only happened because Liverpool appeared to no longer be interested in keeping him at some point.

Leiva said that the best moment of his career was when he played for Liverpool and that even if he could turn back the hands of time, he would still choose the Reds over again because of how he and the fans shared a bond and a cordial relationship both on and off the pitch.
